About TSD
The Sports Dick is written and published by Mike July, a 30 year old sports fan living in Grand Rapids, MI.
A spinoff of Unpaid Entertainer, TSD was created to opine regularly in humorous and unorthodox tones on the happenings in the sports world. Just to clarify, I do not consider Ping Pong, Poker, Pool or Women’s Golf to be a sport, and it is unlikely that you will find much content on those topics here. This is of course subject to change in the event that Sergio Garcia decides to join the LPGA and takes Rory Sabbatini with him, in which case I am all ears.
What you will find here is a collections of musings, observations and the occasional rant covering AMERICAN SPORTS THAT MATTER – namely MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL, PGA, NCAA football and basketball, and maybe even a tidbit of NASCAR when something noteworthy happens, like Busta Rhymes creating Team Cadillac and tricking out his racecar with 22″ spinners and the like. That would be worth paying attention to.
The great thing about sports is it’s unique ability to reach and connect so many people in so many different ways with the exact same product. The sports world transcends all racial, economic and social barriers in ways that are unlike any other. The Super Bowl in February, for example, connected the blue collar, hard working people of Pittsburgh to the desert dwellers of Arizona. How else would so many people from such different parts of the country be brought together?
But that’s not even the best thing about sports.
The best thing about sports is the rivalry element. Fans are fervently enthusiastic about the teams they love, and proportionally loathing of the clubs they perceive as their rivals. I grew up as a Michigan fan, watching the Fab-Five do their thing in the early 90’s to the amazing defense that led the ‘97 football program to the national championship. For that reason I harbor a natural, deep seeded animosity toward the Golden Domers, pure disdain for all things Green and White, and an outright hatred of anything that bares even the slightest reflection of the Scarlet and Gray.
